EuroTrip Adventures – FULL Review – Budget Family Travel for US Military PCSing To Germany

Suppose you recently PCS’d to Germany with the US military and your primary goal is “budget family travel” to as many countries as possible!

    Sounds like a solid plan.

In fact, this was our EXACT plan, and I know just the company you can trust to provide you with a budget friendly travel experience – EuroTrip Adventures.

Let me start from the beginning.

When we moved to Germany in 2014, all we wanted to do is see as much of Europe as possible… sound familiar?

As teachers, we only had a 2 year contract on base, so we quickly turned to budget family travel opportunities.

    Budget Family Travel

Like many US military families, we had very limited time to see Europe, so I hit the web to find my options.

One of the first “budget friendly” opportunities I found was through EuroTrip Adventures.

And after 9 different adventures, I was hooked.

So I decided to give you my official review…

EuroTrip Adventures: Budget Family Travel Options

EuroTrip Adventures started in 2010 as an opportunity for like minded adventure seekers to discover Europe on a budget. They provide unique travel opportunities, primarily through extended bus travel (but offer a handful of flights) to top European destinations, to include:

    – Paris, Disneyland, Normandy, & the French Riviera

    – Konigsee, Neuschwanstein Castle, the Black Forest, and other Alpine Adventures

    – Hungary, Slovakia, & Slovenia

    – Belgium, Amsterdam & the world’s largest flower garden

    – Flights to England, Scandinavia, & Iceland

    – The Rhine Falls & Zurich, Switzerland

    – The Croatian Coast & so much more!

Some of the basic services they provide are:

    – Travel Accommodations

    – Hotel Reservations

    – Transportation

    – Trip Organization

    – Coordinating tours from local guides

    – VIP access to the EuroTrip Travel App

    – Exclusive FB group for customer support

    – 24/7 emergency phone

Anyone can experience a EuroTrip Adventure, but over time they started making it more convenient for military families to hop on the bus.

    Europe Bus Tour

I have to admit, before looking at budget travel companies, I was a little nervous about bus travel options. As an American, I haven’t had great bus experiences in the states. Where I’m from, you generally take the bus ONLY when you have to.

And mom would always remind you to, “hold on to your belongings and don’t talk to strangers!”

    Europe is completely different.

    EuroTrip Adventures Bus Experience

Typically when you get on a bus in Europe, you don’t have the same feelings as bus travel in the states.

With EuroTrip Adventures, buses are clean, temperature controlled, and wifi accessible. They speak English and offer different styles of buses, standard and double decker, toilets, and optional family seating.

There’s also a “no eating stinky foods” rule which I absolutely appreciate. I feel like many people forget that you’re on a bus with other humans, so the expectation of “being a good neighbor” should always be kept in mind 🙂

If you’re not comfortable in tight quarters with other humans, then this is probably not your thing.  But if you’re ready to explore, on a budget, and you don’t mind being on a bus for long periods of time, then this is definitely for you.

The biggest take away from my personal bus experience is that I felt safe and comfortable. Oh and the convenience factor…

They picked me up right outside of base.

As a German company, Eurotrip Adventures has pick up locations all over the country to include:

    – Nuremberg

    – Munich

    – Frankfurt

They also made it easy for military families with pick up/drop off locations right outside of base in:

    – Grafenwoehr

    – Kaiserslautern

    – Wiesbaden

    – Stuttgart

Americans Living in Germany; Know Before You Go.

Here’s a quick reminder of things to always bring when traveling as an American. First, don’t forget to bring cash (Euros), passports, a mask & vaccination documents (if necessary).

Not sure which passport you need? Check out our passports guide!

Before getting on the bus, make sure to pack light. In order to clear up space, you’ll want to only bring essentials:

    – Toiletries

    – Snacks

    – Camera/phone

    – Headphones

    – Jacket (if necessary)

    – Small suitcase if staying in a hotel overnight

    – Pillow

    – Entertainment for the kids

The bus will stop at a rest stop during your ride. Make sure to stretch your legs, brush your teeth, and use the rest stop bathroom to keep the bus as clean as possible.

Before the bus ride, you’ll also need to find the right seat. EuroTrip Adventures offers four different seating areas:

    – Family Zone

    – Standard Seat

    – Table Seat

    – Front Row Seat

    EuroTrip Adventures seating chart

Pro Tip: If you’re not seated in the family zone, RESERVE your seats so you’re guaranteed to sit together!

Now that you have a good understanding of what to expect on the bus, let’s go over the details of a typical trip.

    EuroTrip Adventures: Cheap European Vacation

For example, one of the next upcoming trips is to Liechtenstein and Lindau Island.

I’ve been to both these places and highly recommend it.

They offered this trip for as little as €59 per person. Price is based on your pickup location and how many people are in your party so check online for your specific travel package total.

You can get a good idea of trip details on your phone, computer, or through their EuroTrip Adventures App.

    EuroTrip Adventures App

    EuroTrip Adventures App

The Eurotrip App is a MUST have for your budget family travel opportunities. Download the app as a “one stop shop” for specific trip information.

Once booked, you’ll receive an info e-mail code that unlocks it all:

    – Detailed itinerary and schedule

    – Pick up/drop off locations

    – Weather forecast

    – Interactive maps

    – City travel guides

    – Sightseeing & restaurants

    – Currency converter

    – Optional extras

You also have access to a FAQ page that will answer most of your questions, including cancellation policies, updated COVID restriction policies, or details on optional extras.

EuroTrip Adventures Optional extras budget family travel

One of the nice things about EuroTrip Adventures is that they let the customer choose how they want to spend their vacation. There’s no pressure to “stick with the group” on a mandatory guided tour.

Instead, they offer “optional extras” that give you the option to pay extra for a specific activity in the city. Some of those optional extras include a boat/train ride with a local tour guide.

It’s important to understand that EuroTrip Adventures has “Trip Leaders” who help manage the overall flow and organization of the trip. They work for the company and will be with you during most of the trip.

This differs from a local “Tour Guide,” who the company hires to give you a unique perspective of the trip (at an additional cost).

I actually prefer the optional extras because you only get a limited time to spend in a city. So, utilizing public transportation with a local guide is probably the most efficient way to take it all in.

Final Thoughts & Reviews: Budget Family Travel

Traveling long distances on a bus is not for everyone.

    I get it.

But if you’re like most military families – pressed for time and want the best bang for your buck, then you should give EuroTrip Adventures a go!

All you have to do is show up.

Planning for family vacations is stressful enough. Let them do all the work for you – to include worrying about traffic, parking, and transportation to/from your destination.

For me, it was all about finding a budget friendly company that was convenient and who I can trust to do all the “travel leg work.”

EuroTrip Adventures checked all the boxes.

Some of the most common travelers I saw were military families, weekend girl trips, and solo travel.

And if you’re still not convinced of my recommendation, head over to the Eurotrip Adventures review page.

    There’s 100’s of them.

With over 135,000+ followers online, it gives you the warm fuzzy feeling that “people like this.”  The company is credible and has been around for a long time, so I would 100% recommend them for your next budget family travel experience.

Exploring Lindau Island, Germany: Things to do in Lindau, Lake Constance (Bodensee)

With a 3-day weekend ahead of us, we decided to pack up and head south to explore all the things to do in Lindau, Germany. Located on the very south end of Bavaria, Lindau is a unique island full of incredible historic sites.

The drive is just around four hours from our hometown in Grafenwoehr, Germany. Plus, we were celebrating not one, but two birthdays, so obviously the drive was celebrated with party favors and cupcakes! Having friends traveling with us always makes for a more exciting trip.

Americans Living in Germany: Know Before You Go

Lindau is a rock throw away from Switzerland and Austria, so it’s essential to be prepared when traveling there as an American. As always, it’s important to bring cash (euros), your passport, and your military ID. Plus any vaccination documents (if necessary).

Not sure which passport you need? Check out our passports guide!

Traveling by car from Grafenwoehr, Germany will take you approximately 4 hours on the A7.

While we were hoping for sunny weather, we did encounter quite a bit of rain. Make sure you pack a good rain jacket and umbrella. And with all of the walking (and eating) we did, comfy shoes are a necessity.

Taking photos with friends at the Lindau island harbor

    Lindau Island, Germany

Lindau is located on Bodensee, which is German for Lake Constance. Brimming with iconic buildings and landmarks, this is the largest lake in Germany.

    Quick Facts About Lindau

    – The name “Lindau” comes from the coat of arms of Lindau town which is a linden tree. (Linde means linden tree in German). The historic town of Lindau dates back to 882.

    – Lindau Island is 0.68-square-kilometre (0.26 sq miles) and has a population of 25,543.

    – Even though it’s not a large area (12.81 miles), there’s a number of historical landmarks and attractions.

    Where to Stay

In the middle of Lindau Island is the charming Insel-Hotel. Ran by the 4th generation of owners, they really go out of their way to make each guest feel welcome.

This hotel is also Baxter (pet) friendly! And, whether you want to spend your time exploring Lindau Island or Lindau’s mainland, you are just a 5 minutes walk from a bus, train, boat, or bike rental.

    Eating in Lindau

Lindau Island has incredible architecture, gardens, and landmarks. There are so many places to satisfy your pallet that your biggest decision will be what you feel like eating.

    Cafe Ristorante Da Capo

Once we arrive at our hotel, we unpacked and headed off to grab some food! We only had to walk a couple of minutes to find an Italian restaurant called Cafe Ristorante Da Capo. Everything we ordered and ate – from pizza to pasta – was savory and mouthwatering. Prices range from €4.50 to €18, depending on what delicious foods you order.

    Treibgut

After dinner, our Romanian friend took us to a Romanian bar called Treibgut. We enjoyed a few rounds of drinks and learned how to say “cheers” Romanian style – Noroc! This was a perfect way to end our first day on Lindau Island.

shrimp and rice food dish at hotel bayerischer in lindau germany

    Hotel Bayerischer Hof: Corner Café

Located in a 5-star hotel right on the harbor promenade, with 160 years of history, this is as enchanted as it sounds. The Corner Café serves delightful, homemade regional specialties. You can choose between snacks, cakes, pies, and other specialties to enjoy with an afternoon tea or coffee.

Items range in price from €3 – €30. And, if you choose to sit in the garden or terrace, you’ll have a view of the famous Bavarian lion statue and the Lindau lighthouse.

    Mediterraneo Mitteimeerspezialitaten

One of the many amazing places we ate at was the Mediterraneo Mitteimeerspezialitaten! Since we were wrapping up a friend’s birthday and we didn’t have a gift (pun totally intended), we bought a painting right off the wall of this restaurant. Where else can you have a yummy dinner and buy a painting right off the wall?

    37° Kaffeebar & Ladengeschäft

Another place with a harbor view, 37° Kaffeebar & Ladengeschäft offers outdoor seating while enjoying coffee, a glass of wine, beer, or other beverages.

    Restaurant Akropolis

Easily the best Greek food I’ve had in Germany. We highly recommend Akropolis for classic Greek dishes. Whatever you’re in the mood for, the Restaurant Akropolis will provide something you’ll love. This restaurant is also located in the shopping district of Lindau, so check out all the cute stores and outlet mall after a warm meal.

Lindau harbor and the Mangturm tower

    Lindau Attractions

Although small, there’s quite a bit of attractions in every direction of the island. And if you think you’ve seen it all, simply jump on the next ferry to discover a new town or country.

    Bavarian Lion & Lindau Lighthouse

Located at the harbor entrance on Lake Constance, these are the most popular attractions on the island. The Bavarian Lion is 19.685 feet high and weighs 50 tons. Built in 1856, the Baviarian Lion is the work of Munich professor Johann von Halbig. The presence of the lion gives way to a magnificent sense of protection and honor.

Rapunzel's hair hanging from the Mangturm Tower in Lindau germany

    Mangturm Tower

The Mangturm Tower once served as the lighthouse and observation point to Lindau Island. Originally built in the 12th century, it used to be completely surrounded by water.

On October 4th, 1856, Lindau’s new lighthouse was lit. This means that the Mangturm Tower was no longer needed. So, they added another floor to it and covered it with stunning glazed bricks. And if you want to climb the 89 steps to take in the view from the top, you’ll need to check the fairy tale hours first. This is a nod to the fairy tale, Rapunzel, as a “braid” hangs from one of the top loopholes.

    Feitzi’s Rickshaw

One way to get a tour of Lindau Island without walking is to take a ride with Feitzi’s Rikscha: Sightseeing Ride!

A rikscha is a light two-wheeled hooded vehicle/carriage drawn by one or more people on a bicycle.

    Feitzi's Richshaw tourist ride

Feitzi has been doing this for years and knows his way around Lindau Island. The prices range from €6 – €22, depending on where you want to go. It’s definitely a nice way to take in the sights!

    Church of St. Stephan

One of the historic sites we passed on our tour with Feitzi was the Church of St. Stephan. Still an active, evangelical church, this church was founded in 1180 and the altars date back to the 1780s. Truly, there is a rich history on Lindau Island.

    Lindau City Garden

Lindau Island has a lush, city garden. The Lindau City Garden is a welcoming place to walk through the exotic trees or rest on a park bench. You can also see the flowerbeds that are as diverse in colors as they are flowers. The Lindau City Garden’s atmosphere fits in perfectly with the feeling on Lindau Island.

    Lindavia Brunnen

While continuing on our ride in Feitzi’s rikscha, we passed a bronze female statue and a marvelous fountain known as the Lindavia Brunnen. Designed for the 20th year of the reign of King Ludwig II (known as the “fairy tale king”) of Bavaria by Wilhelm Rümann. Inaugurated in 1884, the sculpture of “Lindavia” holds an oar in her left hand and a branch of linden in her right. This truly is something that is best seen in person to take in all that it is.

Altes Rathaus – Lindau am Bodensee

One of our first landmark stops, which was only a 3-minute walk from our hotel. This outstanding 15th-century historic landmark doesn’t hold back from mesmerizing you with its distinctive arcitecture. It is also known as the “Old Town Hall” and is full of paintings and colors to capture your attention and leave you awe-struck.

Taking pictures in front of the Bavarian lion and lighthouse on lindau island

    Lake Constance Ferry

From touring the beautiful gardens to a boat ride, Lake Constance is full of ways to explore. You can take the ferry to many of the surrounding areas and countries. Since Switzerland was right there, we decided to hop on the one-hour ride. The cost of one adult roundtrip ticket to Switzerland is €28. You can enjoy a drink while you take in the sites around you.

    Herz-Jesu-Kirche (In Rorschach Switzerland)

Arriving in Switzerland from the ferry boat ride, you’ll see the historic Catholic church – Herz-Jesu-Kirche. Constructed from 1895 – 1899, this church is one of the tallest structures in Switzerland. And is still very much a functioning church.

    Hafen Buffet

Right on the harbor of Rorschach, Switzerland, we found yet another delicious dining experience! The Hafen Buffet doesn’t mess around when it comes to mouthwatering food! The gnocchi and pasta were the perfect amounts to fill us up for the rest of our adventure. Prices ranged from €9.50 – €35.00.

    Mainau Island Flower Garden

    Mainau Island

Also called, “Flower Island,” and with historic records going back to 400 BC, Mainua Island is managed by the Bernodatte family. The historic castle, park, and gardens attract around 1.2 million visitors each year.

In 2003 the island of Mainau was placed under monument protection. This means, the specific areas are under protection of the highest level of importance.

    Visiting Lindau Island

A trip to Lindau is definitely one you’ll want to take while you’re in Germany. Make sure you have at least 3-days to spend there exploring! And if you have more time, that’s even better! There’s a lot of history (I mean A LOT!)! So take lots of photos and enjoy all the things to do in Lindau!

Germany to Greece: Exploring Thessaloniki and Sithonia Chalkidiki

From big cities to small beach towns, I will always enjoy visiting Greece! And Thessaloniki is no exception. My friend Stefan and I found a cheap flight from Nuremberg, Germany to Greece for a short weekend getaway.

Thessaloniki has a ton of architecture, museums, and sites to visit! But…we didn’t do any of that. Instead, we spent our time eating, drinking, and relaxing! And that’s what I recommend you do, too.

Sunset on the beach in Vourvourou, a 2-hour drive from Thessaloniki

American Living in Germany: Know Before You Go

First, be sure to bring your tourist passport! Your SOFA passport does not guarantee you the same travel rights as EU citizens.

Not sure what your SOFA passport is? Check out my PCS to Germany guide!

A custard bougatsa - trying one of these has to be on your list of things to do in Thessaloniki!

I also recommend renting a car. You can use public transportation to some extent, but you can see so much more if you have a car! Plus, you can explore on your own time.

    Transportation in Thessaloniki

RyanAir offers cheap flights to select destinations throughout Europe. In other words, they don’t offer flights to many destinations, but the flights they do offer are very affordable and usually fly out of smaller airports.

Plus, they have great deals during the off-season. So while it may not be the warmest in November, it’s still beautiful to visit! And it’s a great opportunity for anyone traveling on a budget.

RyanAir is a popular choice for cheap flights throughout Europe!

They’re also a great airline for short trips because you can easily pack a weekend’s worth of items in one bag. If you want to bring two carry-on items or have a checked bag, RyanAir will charge you extra.

Looking for easy day trips around USAG Bavaria? Check out my top 10 destinations!

Take the bus from the Thessaloniki airport to the city center

Once we landed in Thessaloniki, we took the bus into the city for just €2. And it’s really easy – the stop is right outside the airport, and it takes about 35 minutes to get to the center.

If you want to explore more than just Thessaloniki, rent a car!

We also rented a car to drive to Vourvourou and Sarti Beach. You could spend your entire trip exploring Thessaloniki, but if you’re up for driving a couple hours, then you should definitely make the effort to see more!

Our local hosts in Thessaloniki took us to Negroponte (I highly recommend you go!)

    Where to Eat in Thessaloniki

Greek food is one of my favorites, and there’s no shortage of delicious eats in Thessaloniki!

Even if you don’t have local hosts to navigate the menu for you, Negroponte will be a delicious experience! And since everything on the menu is reasonably priced (most dishes under €11), you can really live it up.

Tigania (pan-fried pork), sauteed mushrooms, Greek salad, and tabouleh (parsley with bulgur, tomatoes, onions, and olive oil)

Negroponte serves dishes that will please omnivores and vegetarians alike! Dolmas (rice wrapped in grape leaves), sauteed mushrooms, Greek salad (with feta), and tabouleh (parlsey with bulgur, tomatoes, onions, lemon juice, and olive oil) were fresh and flavorful. If you visit during the warmer months, these dishes are filling without being too heavy for the summer.

Don't miss the giaourtlou in Thessaloniki! A seasoned meat patty with tomatoes and onions on top of a thin dough crust

As for their meat dishes, we recommend the tigánia, which is pan-fried pork that is lightly seasoned and rich. The giaourtlou is another dish you have to try! The thin dough crust, meat patty, onions, tomatoes, and yogurt are just a great combination of textures and flavors.

Bougatsa is a pastry made from phyllo dough and either cheese, spinach and meat, or custard. You definitely have to try some when you visit Thessaloniki!

As for breakfast, our local guides told us to try bougatsa: a phyllo pastry with cheese, spinach and meat, or a cream/custard. You can find them at a bunch of cafes around the city – definitely one of the top things to do in Thessaloniki!

You can't really go wrong with pizza

If you find yourself in Vourvourou, I recommend the pizza from Gousto at Hotel Vergos. They make big, delicious pies you can take to go. Just remember that the pizza probably won’t be pre-cut, so if you’re staying in a hotel without cutlery…good luck!

Looking for the best pizza in Weiden, Germany? I’ve got your list right here!

Check out Whope in Thessaloniki between April and October for drinks and shisha outside!

If you’re looking for somewhere to have a drink, relax, and/or smoke shisha, we recommend Whope. This outdoor bar also serves small bites if you’re hungry! But keep in mind that this is a seasonal spot – they close from October through April.

Things to Do in Thessaloniki: Visit the Beach

While there’s plenty to visit and tour in the area, my favorite thing to do in Greece is go to the beaches!

Taking a big trip from Germany to Greece? Check out all my Greek guides!

    Vourvourou Beach

Vourvourou, as Stefan puts it, is “on the middle finger” of the three peninsulas south of Thessaloniki. The trio of peninsulas are called Chalkidiki, and Vourvourou is on Sithonia.

If you’re staying in Thessaloniki, I highly recommend renting a car so that you can visit Vourvourou! It’s less than a 2 hour drive from the city and worth the trip.

Enjoy a quiet, relaxing day at the beach just watching the boats or playing volleyball. There won’t be nearly as many people as Mykonos or Santorini, so don’t worry yourself about getting there super early to claim a spot.

Can't go wrong with moussaka and souvlaki in Greece!

When you get hungry, eat at the beach-side restaurants. Moussaka (a lasagna-type dish with eggplant, ground beef, and cheese) and souvlaki (seasoned meat grilled on skewers) are my go-to foods!

No matter where you are in Greece, you can relax on the beach with a beer

    Sarti Beach

Sarti Beach is another great spot to just chill in a lounge chair and watch the waves crash. We spent our day at Bianco Blu, but there are plenty of bars along the beach to choose from.

Do not pass up a donut from the donut man!

And, of course, you have to get a donut from the donut man. I’m not sure how or why donuts became a beach food, but they’re here to stay and I don’t mind!

Frequently Asked Questions about Thessaloniki and Sithonia Greece

Below are some common questions about planning a trip to Greece.

What are the best cities to stay at in Sithonia Greece?

Vourvourou Beach is a great city for a quiet getaway. The beaches aren’t too crowded and it’s great for families. Sarti Beach is another great option as it has a little bit more to do in terms of restaurants and activities.

When is the best time to visit Sithonia Greece?

To get the most out of the beaches, you should visit between early spring and early fall. And don’t worry too much about crowds – it’s not a huge tourist destination!

Which part of Greece has the best beaches?

It really depends on what you want from your beach experience! The beaches in Mykonos are easy to get to and have great club atmospheres. In Lefkada, you have to carry your towels, snacks, and umbrella down to Porto Katsiki Beach, but it’s quiet and has beautiful caves to explore. My favorite beach (so far) is Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia. You’ll find the perfect picturesque spot from the cliffs up above, but make your way down for a majestic beach experience. The beach has plenty of space, warm soft sand, and of course, aqua blue waters.

Donuts from the donut man are a MUST in Thessaloniki

Planning Your Trip from Germany to Greece Already?

Whenever you’re ready to have a donut and chill, Thessaloniki will be waiting for you.

One of the benefits of living in Europe is visiting more than one country in a day! With EuroTrip Adventures, you can see the highlights of Liechtenstein and Austria in one day trip. You can even get your passport stamped!

    Vaduz Marketplatz in Liechtenstein

    2 Countries, 1 Day Itinerary

The bus arrives in Vaduz, Liechtenstein early in the morning. You will have a little less than two hours to explore the country’s capital, but you won’t need much more than that to explore! As of 2017, the city’s population was just 5,521 people (Liechtenstein’s total population was estimated at 38,547).

Visit Vaduz Castle in Liechtenstein, where the royal family still resides!

Walk around the market and enjoy the sculptures throughout the city. You can visit Vaduz Castle, but it’s not open to the public because the royal family still lives there.

Pro-tip: Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc. If you have any left from your previous trip to Switzerland, bring them! Otherwise, you may just want to use your card during the few hours you’re visiting.

Old Town in Innsbruck, Austria on the 2 Countries, 1 Day trip with EuroTrip Adventures!
