Ansbach Germany First Look
First off, let’s get you familiar with the basics.
With a military population of about 6000, USAG Ansbach is about 40 square kilometers (15 square miles) and consists of the city of Ansbach and the town of Illesheim in the Franconian region of Bavaria.
USAG Ansbach makes up 9 different Kasernes:
Barton Barracks: the command center of USAG Ansbach & USAG Ansbach Garrison Headquarters
Bismark Kaserne: Army Family Housing, single soldier housing
Bleidorn Kaserne: Army Family Housing and the Garrison’s live community theater
Franken Kaserne: Training center located 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the city of Ansbach
Katterbach Kaserne: Headquarters of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade. Ansbach Community Central Processing Facility for in- and out-processing, as well as the DoDEA schools and more Army Family Housing
Shipton Kaserne: “Soldiers Lake” recreation center with outdoor grills, picnics, and a favorite fishing spot for the Ansbach community
Storck Barracks: Located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Ansbach, and is adjacent to Illesheim. Storck Barracks also has an airfield to accommodate rotational aviation forces and is home to Theater Aviation Support Maintenance Overseas (TASM-O), and one of only two flight simulation building complexes in Europe.
Urlas Kaserne: Post Exchange, food court, a new commissary and base townhouses.

Banking 🏦
Service Credit Union & Community Bank
Every base in Germany has these two on-base banking options.
These banks will have ATMs on-base (only) and also at Edelweiss Lodge & Resort.
You don’t need to cancel any banking in the US while living in Germany (unless your lienholder won’t allow you to ship your POV overseas).
Both banks are convenient, have great customer service (especially over the phone), and speak English for any in-person banking needs.
For example, I have my main bank accounts and insurance through USAA, but I pay my German house rent and monthly phone bills through Service Credit Union.
But… you don’t HAVE TO use these banks! In fact, you’ll find that the conversion rates for these banks can be a lot higher than a German bank off-base such as Volksbank.
